As tough as the job market is for most people these days, there are some people who have it harder than most. Age, especially youth, is one of the special barriers to employment that stop people from getting on track. But, there are others, mostly having to do with income and access to transportation.
Earlier today, I announced a program that will give hundreds of City residents a better chance at full-time employment at good jobs in the future. Working through the SLATE UrbanFORCE initiative, young adults (18-24) who live in the City of St. Louis will have an opportunity to earn $9.00 an hour and receive up to 240 hours of on-the-job training with top-notch employers in the St. Louis area. Participants will be placed in employment with a variety of private sector companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. This is an excellent program for our young adults. It is vitally important for our citizens to gain valuable on-the-job training. A more educated workforce makes St. Louis more attractive for business development and relocation. And this program puts our citizens on the right track to success.
There are some restrictions and some qualifications, both for participants and potential employers. Review them here: www.summerjobs.mo.gov.
