Stella Maris is one of the City’s stars: a non-sectarian, not-for-profit center that cares for children without regard for income or race. It is licensed, fully accredited, and completely enrolled.

Earlier this week, Stella Maris executive director Bonnie Shearin and a galaxy of VIPs (including Alderman Frank Williamson) broke ground for a new location — moving from a building on Delmar to the former Clark Elementary School in the Academy neighborhood.

The renovation of Clark is scheduled to be completed by the fall of this year. The new building will allow Stella Maris to boost the number of children it serves to 165, from 131. It will also provide more opportunities for Bonnie and her staff to interact with neighborhood residents — which is part of its official mission.

The move and the necessary renovation were made possible by an aggressive development campaign and tax credits issued under the State Youth Opportunity program.

Stella Maris is a favorite charity of several St. Louis Rams players. It is one of mine, too.
