The thermometer has been a recent reminder that winter is just ahead. Another one is a note from Gentry Trotter reminding me that I agreed to serve as this season’s honorary chairman of Heat-Up St. Louis, Inc., the not-for-profit energy assistance program he founded five years ago — and that I promised to give a speech to his group on Tuesday, October 10.
According to Gentry’s letter, Heat-Up St. Louis has aided more than 75,000 persons, and raised more than $2 million in tax-deductible donations. One hundred percent of all donations go to seniors, people with disabilities, and needy households with small infants. Last year, the Heat-Up raised a record-breaking $700,000 and aided 15,000 persons.
Heat-Up St. Louis’s winter program begins each November and runs through June 1 of the next year. It is followed by the Cool Down St. Louis program that addresses St. Louis weather’s other extreme.
Besides giving a warming speech, I’ll announce that Downtown developer Kevin McGowan will be Heat-Up’s president this year.
