The Twelve Days of Christmas is both a venerable tradition of celebration and a famous carol.
It is a popular annual exercise for economists hoping to break the monotony of tracking interest rates all day to price the 12 days of commodities mentioned in the lyrics. Their project inspired mine: Where would City residents go to find the carol’s gifts?
A partridge in a pear tree? Try the Missouri Botanical GardenAnd if any of those places don’t work out, I strongly suggest that you try the newly refurbished Downtown Macy’s. The new owners are doing a great job there. Two turtle doves? Look on Washington Avenue’s rooftops (and don’t be too picky)
Three French hens? Stop by Straubs in the CWE (and try the smoked shrimp)
Four calling birds? Easy: The 1904 Flight Cage at the Saint Louis Zoo
Five golden rings? Hamilton Jewelers downtown (or, maybe, five golden nose rings at Cheap TRX on S. Grand)
Six geese a’ laying? Carondelet Park (but don’t bother them)
Seven swans a’ swimming? Forest Park’s Post-Dispatch Lake (thanks to Forest Park Forever)
Eight maids a’ milking? Soulard Market (Dr. Kincaid feels pretty strongly about raw milk)
Nine ladies dancing? Club Viva, any Saturday night
Ten lords a’ leaping? Try the second floor, City Hall
Eleven pipers piping? Powell Hall (thanks to Randy Adams and his team)
Twelve drummers drumming? Vashon High School
