On a 5-0 vote, the Police Board voted today to reverse its decision on civilian residency.
It is my hope that on this issue and others, the Board will work more closely in the future with the Police Chief, the citizens, and me before making major decisions.
I don’t think changing the residency policy for the Police Department’s civilian employees would hurt the City. (See the latest Census figures.) But, there is a bigger issue at stake here.
The St. Louis Police Department is a state agency. At the moment, we cannot change that. But, this is our police department. We pay the bills. It is important that the Police Board understands that. And it is important that they listen to us.
