I am amused to announce that the world's preeminent aircraft maker, Boeing, is joining the City of St. Louis is sponsoring a very earth-bound experience: the chance to walk, cycle, run, or skate on 5 miles of car-free city streets. We are calling it Open Streets.

Beginning May 1, and on three additional weekends (June 13, September 19, October 9), we will kick cars off a route along Locust and Lindell between the Old Post Office downtown and Forest Park in the CWE. Volunteers (see below, we will need you!) will staff "activity areas" along the route, featuring bike repair stations, water, and informational booths. At several hubs ' the park, the OPO, Grand Center, and the Downtown Y ' there will be activities, like bike safety and fitness classes. Everything will be free.

Open Streets is a time for St. Louisans to reclaim the road. It's important for all of us to get outside and be physically active ' and this event is a great time to meet our neighbors, get some exercise, and enjoy our City.

If you want to help, call Helen Yane in my office, 314 622-3201. Here is the website: http://stlouis.missouri.org/open-streets
