There are plenty of times as mayor when I wish I could just flip a magic switch to make something good happen. And I have to tell you that are relatively few times when anything at City Hall is that easy.

Tomorrow, though, is one of those days.

Sometime after 4:30 pm, I’ll be at the amphitheatre in Kiener Plaza to flip the switch that turns on all of Downtown St. Louis’s Christmas decorations. The event, which will include music, fireworks, donuts, hot chocolate, a reading of the The Night Before Christmas, and a horse-drawn carriage with Santa, is formally known at the Macy’s Holiday Festival of Lights — and it kicks off the Christmas Season in the City. Note the name Macy’s in the title: the new store’s first sponsorship of this event promises to be a first-class experience for all of us.

KMOV-TV will broadcast the lighting — and Thursday’s Ameren Mid America Holiday Parade — live.

About the parade on Thursday: There’s a new route. The whole thing steps off at 8:30 am on Thanksgiving morning at the intersection of 4th and Washington.
