Getting from the central business district to the riverfront has always reminded me of a real-life game of Frogger — with pedestrians playing the part of the imperiled amphibian. Interstate 70 and the adjacent roadways have been barriers for 50 years.
A realistic solution, of course, is the Lid Project supported by Senator Jack Danforth and the advisory group I empanelled last year. But, that project will take further planning, more money, and plenty of time to realize.
Today, though, was a step in the right direction: a new privately-funded, $8 million, 400-foot tunnel was opened beneath the highway. It is a bright, carpeted connection that will help get people — including the tens of thousands of conventioneers looking for the shops, restaurants, hotels, and casino games of Lumiere Place, for Laclede’s Landing, or for a river view safely across the highway.
