We started the St. Louis Family Justice Center so that our neighbors who are victims of domestic violence could get everything they needed in a single safe place. I think it is one of the most important things I’ve done as mayor.

At the Family Justice Center, victims can get help from police officers, prosecutors, forensic medical professionals, legal advocates, chaplains, counselors, victims advocates and support service professionals. It is a place where these victims and their children can start getting their lives back on track.

The St. Louis Family Justice Center was recognized recently by Vice President-elect Joe Biden. Talking about our efforts, he said, “This client-centered focus reduces the victim’s stress and confusion and allows victims to concentrate on making important choices and assessing services so they can move forward in their lives and the lives of their children.”

I am hosting a fundraiser for the Center tonight. My co-chairs will include Catherine Hanaway, Jennifer Joyce, Dee Joyce Hayes, and Claire McCaskill - four present or former prosecutors who well understand the families served by the Center. This event will raise a lot of money, but the need far outstrips the resources. The Center needs money, a range of in-kind items (things like soap, toys, non-perishable food), and your time. If you can help in any way, send me an email.
