Mayor Slay is in China. This item was written by Helen Yane:
I was hired for my job in the Mayor’s Office after responding to an online job announcement I found on the City website. It is a great job most of the time and it’s especially rewarding when I’m working on City initiatives that truly matter to our community.
Right now, I am organizing the City’s Open Streets project. The plan is to open five miles of city streets to cyclists, skaters, pedestrians, joggers, residents, and tourists to enjoy from the hours of 8 am until 1 pm on a weekend day. No cars.
The first event is scheduled for May 1 along Lindell and Locust - busy streets most other days.
Why? To showcase what’s on our streets. To let you enjoy the City differently. To connect a few City neighborhoods in ways that educate and inspire. To give you a chance to exercise and people watch from the middle of the road.
Open Streets is going to be a wonderfully visible demonstration of the City’s commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles, creating a more vibrant and active urban area, and encouraging outdoor recreation. I’m betting people will notice.
