Monday afternoon at 4:30, the City’s Preservation Board will consider a new design for Government Hill in Forest Park. Although the Board’s role at this point in this process is only advisory, everyone involved is taking it very seriously.

The new design is quite different from — and less dramatic than — the highly stylized landscaping and construction plan Forest Park Forever’s architects presented to the Preservation Board a month ago. The Board, which had not studied the design, wisely deferred any decision at that meeting.

This new proposal, which now reflects the advice of Planning Director Rollin Stanley and Cultural Resources Officer Kate Shea, retains (and reconstructs) most of the elements currently on Government Hill, including the fountain. The hill will no longer be re-graded. The accessible paths will not be as visible. The vista will be familiar.

Rollin and Kate believe that, although some more work needs to be done on the materials and finishes proposed for the new design, this new effort is worth recommending for preliminary approval.
