A story in today’s New York Times mentioned the decline of the ritual of free holiday turkeys. The article noted that the practice, once fairly common, of giving away turkeys as gifts to people has largely been replaced by the gifting of certificates and coupons.

That was not the case here last weekend when warm-hearted Demetrious Johnson and a hundred of so of his friends helped distribute two thousand actual holiday turkeys to families who needed them. The turkeys were purchased through donations to DJ’s foundation and by the City’s Human Services Department.
