I have not yet finished reviewing the White House’s proposed federal budget, but the early news for American cities is grim. Among the programs scheduled to be eliminated or cut are those that fund the creation of affordable housing, reduce crime, modernize law enforcement technology, support early learning, create accessible housing for people with disabilities and affordable housing for seniors, reduce lead hazards, and fund many social services through the Community Development Block Grant. Among the
programs scheduled to be increased: both tenant and project based rent assistance, and homeless assistance.
It is a clichéd observation, but American cities like St. Louis might be better off if we were the capitals of provinces in Iraq.
