Today is a good day to tell a story about my dad, Francis R. Slay.

When I was growing up, he ran a restaurant. His place was one of the first in south St. Louis at which blacks and whites worked together and sat down to eat as friends.

We never had a lot of money, but he staked his children to an even more important inheritance: the belief that a City that celebrates its diversity is a better place than one that clings to its differences.

Happy Father’s Day, dad.
