Consider today a free trial of a great idea. Or practice. To promote the use of its buses and light-rail trains, Metro is offering free rides today as part of a national “Dump the Pump Day.” Local commuters can use the day to test-ride an alternative way to work, school, or an evening at the Fox Theater.
Consider, though, using Metro tomorrow and the rest of the month to save money — and to help the environment. With gas at four dollars a gallon and a commute of 24 miles, the “average commuter” could save $1,800 a year riding Metro rather than driving. And buses and trains are many times more efficient than cars, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions.
So, ride a bus — and spend the savings at a great City restaurant, clothing store, or (shout-out to a favorite of this website) Left Bank Books.
