This past weekend, I was a participant in a ceremony honoring Demetrious Johnson, a latter-day Tiger and Lion, and a present-day City hero. The National Athletic Trainers Association, in St. Louis for a conference, gave DJ its 2008 Bill Chisolm Ethnic Diversity Advisory Council Professional Service Award.

I told the NATA group that DJ was an active partner in this summer’s series of football and basketball-themed character building camps in City parks — and that his foundation was doing important work in creating partnerships between local businesses and our schools and universities.

I learned, though, that I could not tell them anything good about DJ that they did not already know.
