State Revenue Director Trish Vincent complained this week that Secretary of State Robin Carnahan’s published list of 240,000 people who could be lacking a photo ID needed to vote at the polls in November might be exaggerated. According to Ms. Vincent, only 170,000 eligible Missouri voters lack such photo IDs.

To put both numbers in perspective: According to Secretary Carnahan, more Missouri voters than were registered in all of St. Charles county in 2004 might be unable to cast ballots in November. According to Director Vincent, it would merely be more disenfranchised voters than the total registered voting populations of Jefferson and St. Genevieve counties in 2004.

It doesn’t matter which official is right. The law is wrong.
