Last summer, I announced a revision to the City’s tenant eviction regulations that required landlords to dispose of former tenants’ belongings properly or face fines. Before that policy change, some landlords would simply dump their tenants’ belongings onto sidewalks or in alleys. The result was a neighborhood mess — and an expense to taxpayers to clean it up.
According to data from the most recent CityView meeting, the new policy is working: clean-up costs after evictions have been reduced ten-fold.
