Claire McCaskill’s election yesterday should hearten all St. Louisans because it means that programs essential to the urban agenda — real healthcare reform, fair immigration laws, an overhaul of the tax system to favor middle-class families, and more efficient government — will have an articulate champion in Washington, DC, in 2007.

I have never seen Claire back away from a fight because it was too tough, abandon a problem because its solution was too complex, or forget where she came from.

Harry Truman, the Missourian Claire most admires, said that progress happens when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.

Claire McCaskill’s election will mean a better future for Missouri families and progress for the City of St.Louis.
