In addition to the names of federal, state, and local candidates seeking election, St. Louis area voters will find several other issues on the bottoms of their ballots this November.

Some of these issues will come attached to high-profile campaigns; others will be supported or opposed by a mailer or two and a couple of letters to the letter. All of the issues, though, deserve your serious consideration.

Three of the issues on the November ballot were placed on the statewide ballot by petitions. Missouri is one of only two dozen states that allow citizens to change their state Constitutions or laws by conducting signature collection drives and placing the question before their neighbors. This is a very serious power, because it directly shares an important prerogative of the legislature with the people — and because it can be sometimes be abused by special interests who bypass the rigors of the legislative process.

Over the next several days, I plan to share my thoughts about some of these ballot issues.
