I want a civilian review board for the Police Department.

But unless the City’s Board of Aldermen and the Board of Police Commissioners are on the same page, we will not have a real civilian review board. Under state law, a CRB can only operate effectively — with enough tools to exercise oversight — if the Police Board goes along with it.

Board Bill 69 is vastly different from the policy passed by the Police Board. If the Police Board does not accept BB69, whatever its supporters’ best intentions, the entity it creates won’t be able to function as a civilian review board.

We’ve made some important progress, but we aren’t quite there yet.
