American Airlines has announced major reductions in service. We do not know what that means for St. Louis and for Lambert Airport, but I am cautiously optimistic for two reasons:

  • We have already been through cut-backs. American has sized its St. Louis operations to meet the passenger demand here.

  • We are told that American is profitable in St. Louis.

    Having said all that, given the skyrocketing cost of aviation fuel and the overall slowdown in the national economy, the future of the entire airline industry over the next year or so is very uncertain.

    So, stay tuned.
