The St. Louis Fire Department is welcoming ten new recruits into its Fire Academy today. Over the next thirteen weeks, the recruits will go through a grueling regiment of physical training, classroom lectures, and hands on activities, in an effort to acclimate to a career in the fire service.
Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson has dedicated this class to retired Deputy Fire Chief Stanley Newsome. Chief Newsome was appointed to the St. Louis Fire Department on February 19, 1962. He was promoted to Captain on December 31, 1978 and again to Battalion Chief in 1986, finally achieving the rank of Deputy Fire Chief in 1991.
Chief Newsome retired in May of 2000, having served the St. Louis Fire Department for more than thirty-eight years.
