Letters to the EditorSt. Louis Post-Dispatch900 North TuckerSt. Louis, MO 63101

The next two years will be among the most important - and challenging - in the region's history. I am determined to use them to take the advantage of years of prudent reinvestment in physical infrastructure and an emphasis on preparing a well-trained work force to compete in new markets and industries. The St. Louis region will need strong partners in Washington, DC, to support our efforts.

We will have in US Sen. Claire McCaskill and US Sen. Roy Blunt a dissimilar pair of effective advocates in the Congress's upper chamber. Our representation in the US House will be smaller than in past sessions, but no less important.

St. Louis County voters will most likely send Ann Wagner to Congress. City and County voters together will select a second member of Congress. I strongly believe that their choice should be Democratic incumbent William Lacy Clay.

Congressman Clay has provided quietly effective leadership across all sectors of the community on issues that matter to working families. Congressman Clay stood shoulder-to-shoulder with us to advance our mutual progressive agenda of saving good jobs, helping small businesses grow, improving community-based healthcare, cleaning up the environment, investing in vital infrastructure projects and building stronger neighborhoods. He worked tirelessly to help City and County residents and businesses rebuild after the New Year's Eve tornado.

It is not by chance that along with my support, Congressman Clay has also has been endorsed by Governor Jay Nixon, County Executive Charlie A. Dooley, the Missouri State AFL-CIO, the Greater St. Louis Labor Council, the Building and Construction Trades Council, Teamsters Joint Council 13, the United Auto Workers, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 788 and numerous other Democratic elected officials, organizations, wards and townships.

As a region with many critical needs, we cannot afford to send anyone less than the strongest, most effective, progressive voice to Washington. I urge you to join me in supporting Congressman Clay's re-election on Tuesday, August 7th.

Francis G. SlayMayor, City of St. Louis
